Around Saariselkä, winter transforms the landscape. Snow covers trees and paths, while the limited daylight brings out colours and contours. Even a short time outdoors can leave a strong impression.
Urho Kekkonen National Park
Saariselkä lies on the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park. Forests and fells offer different ways to get to know the landscape. Fells are the open uplands of the north; the term does not mean that a walk will be easy.
Take winter seriously
Cold, wind and short days call for careful planning. Choose routes suited to your activity and the current conditions. Marked winter walking routes, ski tracks and snowshoe trails are not interchangeable. Current information from the park authority helps with the choice.
